Allman Brothers Band hittin' the note
Hittin' the Note  2003 * * * *
Judging from the cover, it may have taken a stampede of elephants to drive the Allman Brothers Band back into the studios.  After a nine year studio absence "Hittin' the Note" does a fine job of delivering a powerful punch with help from recent band member Derek Trucks.

The Beatles Rubber Soul
Rubber Soul  1965 * * * * *
The Beatles certainly raised the bar when they arrived on the music scene in the early sixties.  Kim Simmonds (founding member of British blues rockers Savoy Brown) may have best explained the impact the fab four had on rock and roll when he said -- "The Beatles were the first British band to get American music right ... then bring the music back to America."

Sergent Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band  1967 * * * * *
The Beatles further redefined the essence of rock music with the 1967 release of Sergent Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.  The album was an engineering masterpiece.  Recorded with a modest four track recorder, Sergent Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band set a new standard in terms of studio production.

Randall Bramblett
Randall Bramblett is a very talented songwriter/musician/singer/performer -- Thin Places finds Bramblett once again surrounded by great musicians.  Inventive compositions, interesting music and harmonies make Thin Places a top notch recording.  A few songs worthy of special mention are You Can Be the Rain, Are You Satisfied, and Chet Baker.  The lyrics and exquisite harmonies on You can Be the Rain suggest a song that would easily climb the charts providing listener polls were actually interested in genuine talent.  The song portrays a sense of guarded optimism that better days could be realized if a certain someone would make better choices.  People can be the rain against a window until they're ready to come inside and contribute to the whole of caring relationships.

Humble Pie Performance Rockin the Fillmore
Performance: Rockin' the Fillmore  1971 * * * * *
(The album was released on Compact Disc in 1990)
In 1971 both the Allman Brothers Band and Humble Pie made rock and roll history with their Fillmore performances.  When Humble Pie recorded Rockin' the Fillmore, guitarist/vocalist Steve Marriott and company left a legacy that'll be difficult to improve upon.  In one of the most powerful blues rock performances ever transfered onto vinyl Humble Pie carved out their slice of rock and roll pie with a chainsaw.

Marriott's fortified blues vocals and prolific guitar interaction with guitarist Peter Frampton tipped the scales in terms of giving back to their audience.  Humble Pie had come to play -- the band delivered a legendary performance that has endured the test of time unscathed.

Jimi Hendrix Are You Experienced?
Are You Experienced?  1967 * * * *
The Jimi Hendrix Experience introduced a new chapter in rock music with the release of Are You Experienced.  The guitar prowess of Jimi Hendrix [along with rhythm section Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell] offered a glimpse of things to come.  The influences of Jimi Hendrix would be noted for decades.  Hendrix pushed the envelope with his articulate union of electric guitar and controlled distortion.  Amplification had become more than a means to an end -- amplified guitar had been reinvented and Hendrix carved his signature fretwork into the future of rock music.

Lizard 1970 * * * * *
King Crimson's Lizard album wasn't as widely embraced as the efforts that came years later.  Perhaps the audience wasn't ready for such maturity and sophistication of instrumentation and compositions.  Yes' Jon Anderson provides the lead vocals on a portion of the 'Lizard' suite.

Robert Fripp and company proved themselves to be innovative pioneers of both music and technique through the years.  Lizard has been remastered in 24-bit by Robert Fripp and rereleased as part of their 30th Anniversary / Limited Edition collection.

Dark Side of the Moon
Dark Side of the Moon  1973 * * * * *
Pink Floyd charted it's own path and received wide recognition following the release of Meddle and Obscured by Clouds.  The March 1973 release of Dark Side of the Moon became an instant success breaking numerous records on the charts.  The album literally skyrocketed Pink Floyd's career.  Dark Side of the Moon is [one of] the best selling albums of all times with over 35 million copies being sold since it's original release.  Dark Side of the Moon is another example of a project that raised the bar in terms of concept, writing, engineering and studio production.

Twice Removed From Yesterday    Robin Trower Bridge of Sighs    For Earth Below
When Robin Trower launched his solo career in the early seventies he created a wall of sound with his guitar that even a sledgehammer would have labored to crack.  Bridge of Sighs was a landmark recording and became an icon of sorts for the successful union of overwhelming guitar force and equally powerful vocals delivered by James Dewar.

The former Procol Harum guitarist remains quite active in the studio today recording new material.  Much of his back catalog has been remastered and reissued on CD in recent years.

(April 2004) -- Victrola for Sale is a stark reminder that rock music is alive and kickin' in the twentieth century.  The CD introduces original compositions steeped in rock tradition yet seasoned with an inventive approach to alternative rock.  Wheelhorse emerged from a network of deep roots whose underground branches absorbed the nutriments of diverse musical influences.  The band has been around for ten years -- the current lineup has been together for two years.  The music of Wheelhorse refuses to be pigeonholed into any one genre -- textures of alternative, blues, country and rock are melded together like the strike of a blacksmith's hammer.  Wheelhorse has proven noteworthy per getting it right -- having refined their artistry before recording the debut.

Their musicianship, vocals and arrangements take on a unique blend of originality.  Listening to Victrola for Sale for the first time is like taking a ride in an old classic with brand new shocks -- there's something familiar about it yet the ride is different.  I highly recommend taking Wheelhorse for a test drive ... Victrola for Sale hugs the road, corners well, and the ride is music to your ears.

::::::: The Who   Choice Selections...
The Who Live at Leeds
Live at Leeds  1971 * * * * *
This legendary British rock group formed in the sixties ... The Who were an essential part of the early British rock movement.  They were breaking musical barriers as well as busting more than a few guitars and drums sets during their live performances.  The group soon became known as the rowdy rebels of rock and roll, yet the band's early years were more than just exercises in rebellious extravagance.

The band gave birth to a powerhouse of energy, talents, influences and enthusiasm.  Pete Townshend, Keith Moon, Rodger Daltry and John Entwistle had collective skills that were upfront and undeniable on every level.  Original compositions pushed musical boundaries and explored new territories that mapped a course other bands would follow.

YES - Union    Fragile was released in 1972 and Close to the Edge soon followed    The YES Album 1970
* The Union CD was a joint effort that started out as two different YES Bands recording their own Albums.  Each group contained original members of the YES group.  YES, and the group Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe, upon learning of the two projects soon turned it into a collaborative effort and also did a joint "UNION" tour.  The interesting thing to me is the fact that according to interviews this is their least favorite effort and it was a labor of stress  instead of a labor of love.  However, if you have followed YES's music since the 70's, this is indeed a great recording and one of their best projects during the 90's.
