Tinh was born a few miles northeast of Saigon. From there, he moved to Pakistan, then moved to the Philippines. Next, he attended college in Salem, Oregon where he earned a bachelor of music degree and Salem, Oregon became Tinh's residence. Tinh began expressing the turbulent life experiences of living in Vietnam during the war through his music.
Tinh and guitar master John Fahey became friends in Oregon, often sharing new songs with one another. Tinh studied the guitar techniques of his mentor and now carries the torch of the late John Fahey through his own music and own interpretations.
TInh gives honor to Fahey through a composition that Fahey was unable to finish. Fahey was never satisfied with the direction of this particular composition and eventually offered it to Tinh for completion. Tinh finished the composition and respectfully titled it, "I remember John Fahey."
On the evening I saw Tinh perform, he ended the performance with an open C tuning arrangement of the Star-Spangled Banner and dedicated it to the audience. That song, along with original compositions, can be found on his "Acoustic Rain" CD.
